Sin perder ni una onza de impulso, «The Artist» coronó su camino triunfal hacia la noche de los Oscars con una victoria gigantesca en los BAFTA Awards. Siete estatuillas (de doce posibles) fueron las que la Academia Británica le otorgó a la película francesa, que barrió en unos premios en los que históricamente se suelen dividir los galardones entre distintas películas. «The Artist» no solo ganó los esperados y obvios premios a Mejor Película, Mejor Director, Mejor Música Original y Mejor Fotografía (donde la favorita de la temporada de premios «The Tree of Life» estuvo ausente), sino que también consolidó el estatus de favorito de Jean Dujardin en la categoría de Mejor Actor (tras haber ganado el SAG) y se llevó sorpresivamente premios al Mejor Guión Original (contra el favorito «Midnight in Paris») y a Mejor Diseño de Vestuario (contra su fuerte competencia «Hugo»).
Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), por su parte, le hará el camino difícil a Viola Davis (The Help) en la categoría de Mejor Actriz tras ganar el BAFTA y el Golden Globe (Davis tiene el SAG y el Critics Choice Award), mientras que en las categorías de reparto tanto Christopher Plummer (Beginners) como Octavia Spencer (The Help) se consolidaron como imbatibles después de haber barrido con los premios más importantes de la temporada (Golden Globe, SAG y Critics Choice Awards).
Los Premios de la Academia Británica de Cine (BAFTA Film Awards) son el equivalente británico de los Oscars y buscan premiar anualmente lo mejor del cine que se ha estrenado el Reino Unido. Creados en 1948 por la Academia Británica de Cine y Televisión, estos premios se han convertido en unos de los más importantes del cine a nivel mundial y en una vitrina para la industria cinematográfica británica.
